Stocks were surprisingly strong last week, especially after the blowout jobs number on Friday. Stocks in the S&P 500 closed down just 0.16% after it was reported that July added 528,000 new jobs, more than double what was expected. This is one-half to the answer that could mean the Fed will have to continue its aggressive rate hikes and send the economy into a recession but stocks seemed to shrug it off in light of continued good earnings reports.
Reading through the Factset Earnings research though, I discovered something few are talking about…that corporate earnings are not nearly as strong as the market thinks. It could change the stock market’s outlook over the next few months and send stocks lower ahead of third quarter earnings.
