Investors are getting to the point of capitulation, a critical emotional signal when frustration at falling stock prices gets too much and many give up and sell. It acts as a reset for the market and can help birth the next long-term bull market. Capitulation alone can’t do it though. A long lasting run higher in stocks needs a hint of economic factors shifting as well…and we’re not quite there yet. That said, we are closer and beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel. My view is that the recent run in stocks is still just a bear market rally and we likely see lower lows but we are closer to the next bull market.

This week will be pivotal for the market with a wave of economic data and earnings. Most will be watching the meeting of the Federal Reserve on Wednesday but lately these have been non-events. Tech stocks take the earnings spotlight, especially after the huge selloff last week in social media stocks. More than a third of the companies in the S&P 500 report next week, the busiest of the season. We see the first estimate of second-quarter economic (GDP) growth on Thursday. The Atlanta Fed GDPTracker tool is estimating the economy fell 1.6% last quarter. Consensus forecasts by economists surveyed by Dow Jones is still for a 0.3% increase. With the tracking error on the Fed tool very low, it’s likely that an economic contraction is the big news of the week. That would mark two quarters in a row and a ‘recession’ by many investors’ standard but not the official standard used by the NBER.
